Multiple Projects in $4.5 Billion Program
Port wide Redevelopment Programs
LEED Certification goals for all new construction
Long Beach, CA
The Port of Long Beach, the second largest port in the United States and located in Southern California’s San Pedro Bay, serves as a major transportation and trade center providing shipping terminals for nearly one-third of the waterborne trade moving through the West Coast. Expecting to see significant growth in the coming decades, the Port’s principal goals remained the same – to increase the Port’s economic viability while minimizing the environmental impacts of port operations, increase safety and security, and continue to provide the best customer service to Port tenants and vendors. In 2005, the Port adopted a “Green Port Policy” to establish a coordinated and comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship of the Port’s natural environs. In 2006, they completed their Strategic Plan setting the stage for the $4.5 billion Capital Improvement Program. Already recognized as a leader in port environmental stewardship and sustainability, the Port is committed to constructing all new projects in accordance with US Green Building Council’s LEED criteria, their Green Port Policy and the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan including a minimum goal of LEED Silver for all Port facilities. Since 2007, 3QC has served on multiple Port teams as Sustainability Consultant and Commissioning Authority. To date, our services have included LEED consulting and commissioning on over $252 million of port projects including the projects below.
Working on a multiple project program of this size and scope required significant understanding of the client’s overall policies, procedures, organization, business operations and key issues. The Port of Long Beach was not only constructing the Port of the Future with high environmental standards and high performance facilities but also is in the business of providing a secure, safe, environmentally sound and operationally functional port for its tenants and customers. With a high regard for customer service, timely occupancy of facilities is critical factor in the Port’s program and the functionality of the Port. Keeping this in mind and understanding the complexity of this program, 3QC has worked to bring value to the Port through our services by providing improved quality in the design and construction process.
