3QC provided security design and commissioning services to ensure compliance with Title 24 for the new Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex, formerly known as the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex. The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, renewed this 29-acre park by replacing an existing basketball gym and swimming pool with a new 29,000 SF pool building and 16,000 SF gym facility. The project which sits next to the Jackie Robinson Stadium and is used for track & field, concerts and special events, will also include replacement and addition of existing stadium locker rooms, restrooms, concessions and miscellaneous accessory buildings. The project was constructed in multiple phases to allow for all facilities to remain open to the community during the renovation.
Studio Pali Fekete Architects (SPFa) was awarded the project and 3QC was hired to provide security design as well as commissioning for the project. As the design moved through schematic design in 2014, it became clear that the City’s requested design elements were going to come in over their budget. So 3QC, as part of the design team for security systems worked to find cost savings design measures in order to reduce potential costs. One such measure included the City’s desire to have cameras. Our team chose to incorporate cameras that could be installed directly onto existing light poles, rather than stand-alone elements, contributing to the reduction request by the City.
Additionally, the Obama Sports Complex is the City’s first Zero Net Energy building, per the Living Building Challenge. With the intent to reach that goal, our security design team had to be mindful of the electricity draw required for all elements used. In July 2016, it was confirmed by a City-hired, third party that the project was indeed on track to attain this goal. Thinking ahead of the game allowed 3QC to help the City address budget concerns and come up with creative solutions for cost savings measures while still meeting goals.
