200,000 SF Expansion
LEED Silver Certified
Anaheim, CA
Originally built in 1967, the Anaheim Convention Center is the cornerstone of Anaheim’s Resort District. Visitors and convention attendees have access to Anaheim’s sports and entertainment venues making it a highly sought-after destination. In 2014, the City approved a Design-Build contract to construct a 200,000 SF expansion that includes a new multipurpose building, new parking structure, loading docks and climate-controlled access to the second level of the recently modernized existing facility. The expanded Convention Center is now one of the largest convention centers on the west coast offering a larger, more diverse and sustainable environment to accommodate the increasing and more complex needs of today’s convention center clientele.
3QC performed Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning to assist the City of Anaheim in achieving their energy conservation and sustainability goals. The project achieved LEED Silver certification.
During design, 3QC identified potential energy conservation measures in the HVAC design. Nine meeting rooms were going to be served by a single AHU with nine space thermostats averaged to determine Heating or Cooling modes. This did not allow the level of thermal control for the meeting rooms that were occupied with the others that were unoccupied. Through a collaborative effort, 3QC worked with the Mechanical design-builder to redesign the HVAC to include VAV boxes (with reheat) to control the air temperature in each meeting room independently of the other spaces served by the same AHU resulting in more precise occupant comfort and control as well as energy conservation when spaces were not in use.
